The Ordo gives a list of contractions and symbols used. What follows is an explanation of how the Ordo should be read.
The left hand column gives the month date. The column on the right gives the colour for the Office of the day. Where two colours are indicated the second colour is for Vespers. A (Albus), White; U (Violaceus), Violet; Ros (Rosaceus), Rose; R (Ruber), Red etc.

15 Dec |
Saturday. Octave Day of the Immaculate Conception. Double-major rank. A commemoration of the Advent feria is made in Lauds and Mass. In Mass the Gloria and Creed are sung, the Preface of the BVM (of the feast as noted above) is sung. Vespers are of the following Office, the Sunday (the antiphons are proper, the psalms of Saturday) a commemoration of the preceding Office is made and of St. Eusebius Bishop & Martyr. The Doxology of the hymn Creator alme does not change to the the form for the BVM and thus the ordinary melody is used. |

In this Vespers and tomorrow the Altar is adorned with flowers and other festal decoration, the organ is played as it is 'Rose' Sunday and the deacon and sub-deacon wear dalmatic and tunicle respectively (violet ones if rose is not available) rather than folded chasubles that are worn normally in Advent. |

The Third Sunday of Advent (which is called Gaudete). Semi-double of the Second Class. At Mattins the invitatory is Prope est and also in the Office of the Season from now to the Vigil of Christmas. St Eusebius is commemorated in Lauds and Mass. At Prime the Domincal preces are sung. In Mass the third prayer is Deus, qui de beate, the Creed is sung and the Preface is that of Sundays. In Vespers (the antiphons are proper, the psalms are of Sunday) a commemoration of St Eusebius is made. At Compline the preces are sung. |

Monday. 'Of the day', simple rank. At the second scheme of Lauds and at the Hours the antiphons are proper, Ecce veniet etc., the psalms are of the day and the prayer is of the precedeing Sunday. Ferial preces are sung [kneeling] at the second scheme of Lauds and at the Hours. In the Mass (of the preceding Sunday but without the Alleluia, versicle after the Gradual and Creed) the second prayer is Deus, qui de beate, the third prayer is Fidelium (for the faithful departed) and the fourth prayer is Ecclesiae or the prayer for the pope. As no specific preface is mentioned the common preface is used. Vespers is of the day but the antiphon on the Magnificat is a 'Great O', O Sapientia, that is sung entire both before and after the canticle and is sung standing. The ferial preces are sung and the prayer is of the preceding Sunday. At Compline preces are sung. [Because preces were sung at Vespers]. |

Tuesday. 'Of the day', simple rank. At the second scheme of Lauds and at the Hours the antiphons are proper, Rorate, coeli etc., the psalms are of the day and the prayer is from the preceding Sunday. Ferial preces are sung [kneeling] at the second scheme of Lauds and at the Hours. In the Mass (of the preceding Sunday but without the Alleluia, versicle after the Gradual and Creed) the second prayer is Deus, qui de beate, the third prayer is Ecclesiae or the prayer for the pope. As no specific preface is mentioned the common preface is used. Vespers is of the day but the antiphon on the Magnificat is O Adonai which is sung entire both before and after the canticle and is sung standing. The ferial preces are sung [kneeling] and the prayer is of the preceding Sunday. At Compline preces are sung. [Because preces were sung at Vespers]. |

Ember Wednesday in Advent. Simple rite. At the second scheme of Lauds and at the Hours the antiphons are proper, Prophetae praedicaverunt etc., the psalms are of the day, the antiphon at the Benedictus and the prayer is proper. Ferial preces are sung [kneeling] at the second scheme of Lauds and at the Hours. In the Mass there is an additional prayer after the Kyrie [followed by an OT lesson] in addition to the usual prayers. After the prayer of the Mass the second prayer is Deus, qui de beate, the third prayer is Ecclesiae or the prayer for the pope. As no specific preface is mentioned the common preface is used. Vespers is of the day but the antiphon on the Magnificat is O Radix Jesse which is sung entire both before and after the canticle and is sung standing. The ferial preces are sung [kneeling] and the prayer is of the preceding Sunday. At Compline preces are sung. [Because preces were sung at Vespers]. |

Thursday. 'Of the day', simple rite. (The Vigil of St Thomas the Apostle of which nothing is kept in the Office). At the second scheme of Lauds and at the Hours the antiphons are proper, De Sion etc., the psalms are of the day and the prayer is from the preceding Sunday. Ferial preces are sung [kneeling] at the second scheme of Lauds and at the Hours. In the Mass (of the Vigil - a bow of the head is made by the celebrant at the name of St. Thomas) the second prayer is of the Advent feria (the prayer of the preceding Sunday), the third prayer is Deus, qui de beate. As no specific preface is mentioned the common preface is used. Vespers is first Vespers of the following feast of St. Thomas (the antiphon on the Magnificat is proper) with a commemoration of the Advent feria (the antiphon on the Magnificat is O Clavis David and the prayer is of the preceding Sunday). At Compline everything is as on feasts. |
